Josef Haydn's Missa in angustiis ('in troubled times') was written near the end of his life in 1798, and reflects a time of political and financial upheaval in Austria. In glorious contrast, Parry's Blest Pair - the sirens in question are Voice and Verse - is a beautiful celebration of choral music based on John Milton's text. Written for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and first performed by the Bach Choir, it has a special place in singers' hearts. We return to St John's (and its garden) for this summer celebration.
